Bimose Tribal Council Member Communities Search and Rescue Equipment

This project entails the acquisition of essential search and rescue (SAR) equipment to bolster the Bimose Tribal Council's commitment to supporting Search and Rescue in Remote Areas, particularly in Northwestern Ontario.

This initiative aims to enhance prevention, preparation, and response capabilities in these challenging environments. The vast and often inaccessible landscapes of Northwestern Ontario present unique challenges for search and rescue operations. Remote and northern communities in this region require specialized equipment to ensure an effective and capable SAR response. This includes advanced navigation tools, communication devices, and terrain-specific gear. Equipping SAR teams with state-of-the-art tools will ensure a faster and more efficient deployment, ultimately improving the chances of successful rescues. The equipment will contribute to prevention measures and preparedness, including practicing and refining SAR strategies to ensure SAR teams are well-prepared for any scenario.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $265,687 for this SAR project.

Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs: Finding Common Ground: A Data Driven Exploration of Search and Rescue and Firefighter Interoperability

The purpose of the Finding Common Ground Project is to supplement the Great Canadian Fire Census with the Great Canadian Fire and SAR Census. By expanding the Census to include questions about SAR, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) seeks to support horizontal SAR efforts and the monitoring and reporting on SAR activities in the context of interoperability with local fire departments. The project will inform current discussions on the Humanitarian Workforce development, how this might translate in practical terms of training, overlap of volunteers, numbers, and local coordination and interoperability in the face of increasing climate emergencies. The results will be shared and will be available to relevant SAR partner organizations to inform SAR response across Canada.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $499,000 for this SAR project.

Canadian Safe Boating Council: SARSmart - Cold Water Awareness Boot Camp Program

This three-year program will develop a cold-water safety and survival program to help prevent search and rescue incidents. Building on the Canadian Safe Boating Council's earlier cold water boot camp programs, the new SARSmart course will use video-based and hands-on training to teach cold-water survival, ice safety, self-rescue, and hypothermia awareness.

The program will gather feedback from Indigenous and remote communities to ensure the content reflects local realities. Volunteers from northern regions will participate, learn cold-water safety skills, and share community-specific knowledge that will help shape the final materials.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $760,409 for this SAR project.

Cochrane Search and Rescue Association: Cultivating Resilient Leadership for Search and Rescue Organization

This initiative will strengthen organizational leadership by piloting a part-time Executive Director position in an effort to enhance the SAR team's governance model, support long-term leadership capacity and inform best practices across the wider SAR community.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $92,334 for this SAR project.

Development Foundation of Treaty Six Confederacy: Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations Search and Rescue Initiative

This project will enhance community safety and emergency response capabilities within First Nations communities, by providing a First Nations-led, skilled, and diverse Search and Rescue Team, with clear goals and deliverables outlined in collaboration with community members to be operational and self-sufficient within a 3-year period.

This project intends to create a dedicated, robust and self-sufficient Search and Rescue Team, which is culturally sensitive and tailored to the unique needs of First Nations. The primary purpose of the project is to enhance community safety and emergency response capabilities within First Nations communities. Grounded in the principles of Indigenous knowledge, community engagement, and emergency response expertise, this project aligns with an Indigenous vision of self-determination, community empowerment, and the preservation of cultural values. By addressing the unique needs of First Nations communities, this initiative aims to enhance safety, foster resilience, and instill a sense of pride and ownership.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $241,200 for this training project.

Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue Association: The New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Three Year SAR NIF Training Project

This project will build capacity and readiness to respond to SAR callouts as well as disasters and emergencies across both provinces. It aims to improve the long-term sustainability of ground search and rescue (GSAR) in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, primarily through the establishment of a GSAR Training Centre, the acquisition of equipment, and the integration of technology among the GSAR teams in both provinces. The expected outcome of the project is to support the national SAR program through improved partnerships and increased interoperability and cooperation.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $840,482 for this training project.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue: Charting a Course for Improving Volunteer Recruitment and Retention in Marine Search and Rescue

This project will improve Canada's search and rescue system by improving the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR)'s ability to recruit and retain marine search and rescue volunteers.

To contribute to the improvement of Canada's search and rescue system, this project will create a volunteer recruitment and retention plan and toolkit, therefore sustaining the volunteer marine search and rescue community on British Columbia's west coast. RCMSAR will achieve this by assessing and identifying practices, integrating findings, and developing a plan that will facilitate recruitment and long-term retention of RCMSAR volunteers on BC's west coast.

Public Safety Canada, through SAR NIF, is providing $162,023 for this SAR project.
