CSIS Director Statement regarding the Consultation on National Security
Statements
Ottawa, Wednesday October 12th, 2016 - The Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Michel Coulombe, issued the following statement regarding the Government of Canada’s consultation on national security and what it means for CSIS:
“Today’s threats are fast, complex and dynamic. Working closely with domestic and international partners, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service must respond effectively to the constantly evolving threat environment. In doing so, the Service fulfills its mandate by investigating activities suspected of constituting threats to the security of Canada, and in certain circumstances, taking measures to reduce them. All of CSIS’ operations are conducted in accordance with well-defined legal requirements and Ministerial Direction and consistent with Canadian values.
Increased public awareness and dialogue is important for the national security and intelligence community. This consultation provides an opportunity for enhanced understanding of our role and mandate. The public conversation on national security is important to all Canadians and this allows them to have input into the national framework designed to ensure their safety and security. Canada's national security laws and policies should reflect the rights, values and freedoms of Canadians.
I encourage Canadians to participate in this very important process.”
