National AccessAbility Week: Building a more accessible public service

From May 31 to June 6, 2026, Canadians come together to celebrate National AccessAbility Week (NAAW). This year’s theme, Building a Strong, Accessible Canada, reminds us that we all benefit when everyone has an equal opportunity to reach their full potential. At Shared Services Canada (SSC), this is an opportunity to show how accessibility helps remove barriers for Government of Canada (GC) employees—and why this work matters year-round.

Accessibility in the public service starts with thoughtful planning, collaboration and innovation. SSC works closely with departments to guide them in the design and implementation of inclusive digital tools and services for GC employees and Canadians.

At the forefront of this effort is SSC’s Accessibility, Accommodation and Adaptive Computer Technology (AAACT) program. For over 30 years, AAACT has helped GC employees remove barriers in their work by recommending and loaning adaptive tools, accessible technologies and tailored solutions for the workplace.

How AAACT supports GC employees

The AAACT program offers a range of services, including:

  • workplace accommodation consultations
  • access to an adaptive technology lending library
  • advice on accessible procurement and digital tools
  • accessibility testing for digital products and services
  • training to support inclusive workplaces

These services offer solutions that help remove barriers and make accessibility part of everyday work in the public service.

In this video, Nadine Charron, Senior Director of the AAACT program, shares how the team works with employees, managers and their organizations to identify practical solutions like adaptive tools and accessible technologies.

Together, by continuing to act and remove barriers, we can help build a stronger, more accessible and more inclusive public service—and a Canada where everyone can fully participate.
