ICELab
SSC’s ICELab (Innovation, Collaboration and Experimentation Laboratory) provides a testing environment for innovative information technology (IT) infrastructure projects and solutions.
As a “Sandbox as a Service,” ICELab offers services to internal SSC teams and Government of Canada (GC) organizations. Located in Ottawa, ICELab is designed to:
- securely host, test and evaluate IT solutions, including hardware, software and workloads
- determine their potential value to organizational business capabilities and service delivery for the GC
ICELab provides an on-demand, cost-efficient IT lab environment supported by professional expertise. It is a flexible, unclassified, vendor-agnostic environment for research and development.
Working with ICELab
ICELab works with fellow federal organizations, as well as internal SSC teams.
We can work with you on specific use cases or make suggestions for using emerging technologies.
If your organization would like to work with ICELab, please contact info-icelab@ssc-spc.gc.ca.
Exploring emerging technologies
At ICELab, we explore emerging technologies, such as:
- artificial intelligence (AI) co-location
- software-defined data centre and automation
- identity and access management
- remote connectivity solutions
- cloud and edge computing
- augmented reality
- Internet of Things sensors
- zero trust architecture
Because ICELab is isolated from the GC’s corporate network, we can explore and assess emerging technologies without impacting production workloads.
We evaluate the operational and business value of these technologies for GC projects and initiatives. We also work closely with Innovative Solutions Canada, an Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada program.
Objectives
The objectives of ICELab are to:
- host, test and evaluate current and emerging products, solutions, technology and business models
- use pilot projects and proofs of concept to help teams finalize procurement investments or fully deploy into production, while also:
- reducing business risk
- accelerating development cycles
- optimizing investments
- provide an IT infrastructure advisory service to SSC projects, as well as to areas across SSC and the GC
- foster and manage innovation through participation in the Innovative Solutions Canada program
