Media advisory
Longueuil, Quebec, — In anticipation of the unveiling of the first science images from the James Webb Space Telescope, the list of cosmic objects targeted for the first observations has been released.
The targets are:
- Carina Nebula
- WASP-96 b (spectrum)
- Southern Ring Nebula
- Stephan's Quintet
- SMACS 0723
These represent the first wave of full-colour scientific images and spectra the observatory has gathered, and the official beginning of Webb's general science operations. They were selected by an international committee of representatives from NASA, the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the Space Telescope Science Institute.
