Minister Garneau is pleased with Lac-Mégantic settlement fund

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement today.
“As Minister of Transport, I am pleased that the $460 million settlement fund, put together following the derailment in Lac-Mégantic, will soon be available to the victims and survivors of the Lac-Mégantic derailment.
“The money from the fund will begin being disbursed to the victims and survivors in January 2016 so they can continue to rebuild their lives and their community.
“Our thoughts and best wishes remain with the residents of Lac-Mégantic, and this tragic accident underscores the need to continue making our rail system as safe as possible.
“The Government of Canada has already taken numerous steps to improve rail safety since 2013, and we will continue to make rail safety a top priority.”
