Handling of Information at Transport Canada
Statement
July 18, 2016 – Ottawa – Transport Canada
Transport Canada issued the following statement today:
Transport Canada recently learned that a USB key was lost at the department's headquarters in Ottawa. It contained some personal information as well as operational and financial files.
We immediately notified the Privacy Commissioner's Office and undertook a thorough investigation which concluded that the USB key was misplaced during an office move and that there was no intentional misconduct. At this time, we are not aware of any information that would lead us to believe that it is in possession of a third party.
However, we take the security and protection of personal information very seriously. We are informing all affected individuals and organizations of the possible breach of information. We will provide the name and contact number of a representative from our Access to Information and Privacy Office to respond to any questions they may have.
Transport Canada has procedures in place to safeguard information. It is taking steps to improve the way employees manage information under their care, to prevent similar occurrences in the future. We deeply regret this incident and apologize to those affected.
