Major Investments for the Magdalen Island Airport and Harbour
Funding for upgrading
July 12, 2016 – Magdalen Islands, Quebec – Transport Canada
The Magdalen Islands airport and harbour are the only links with the mainland for transporting passengers, patients, and goods, serving a community of over 13 000 residents.
The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, today announced major investments for upgrading the airport and Cap-aux-Meules Harbour in the Magdalen Islands. The Government of Canada has committed to invest $26 million to maintain safe operating conditions at the island facilities. This investment is funded in part through Budget 2016.
Investing in local infrastructure is a vital component of the Government of Canada’s commitment to create more middle class jobs and grow the economy, resulting in long-term prosperity for Canadians.
"Maintaining safe operating conditions at the Magdalen Islands airport and harbour infrastructures is essential for islanders’ travel and supply. Commerce, and the transportation of individuals and goods, must be conducted safely and provide effective support to local communities."
The Honourable Marc Garneau,
Minister of Transport
“With the investments announced today, our government recognizes the importance of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine airport and port as transport infrastructure. They are the social and economic engine of our island community and must continue to provide an efficient and safe link to the mainland.”
