Minister Garneau instructs officials to examine options for flight data and voice recorders

Transport Canada will look at new technology and explore regulatory changes

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement today regarding flight data and voice recorders:

“The safety and security of Canadians is the government’s top priority and we take all Transportation Safety Board (TSB) recommendations very seriously.

“I’ve instructed Transport Canada officials to look into expanding requirements for the use of flight data and cockpit voice recorders on aircraft that don’t currently require them. Over the past 20 years, there have been significant developments in technology that are more cost-effective and these options will be explored. I’ve also asked departmental officials to examine the regulatory framework to see what can be implemented. I’ve asked the department to report their findings to me in the coming months.

“The use of flight data and cockpit voice recorders would assist investigators in determining the cause of accidents and how to prevent them in the future.”
