Statement by Minister Alghabra on the eleventh annual Day of the Seafarer

Statement

June 25, 2022               Ottawa              Transport Canada

The Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, issued the following statement:

“Today is Day of the Seafarer—an excellent way to recognize what seafarers do for all Canadians and to express our gratitude.

“Seafarers play an important role in the safe and efficient transportation of goods and people, and the Canadian economy relies on them day-in and day-out. As a maritime country with the longest coastline in the world and dependent on trade by sea, I am proud to recognize the significant contribution that seafarers make at home and abroad, especially throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic. Their dedication towards this demanding work, the daily challenges they face, and sacrifices they make from being away from home and family is commendable.

“In an effort to support seafarers, we continue to work with domestic and international organizations and partners to advance standards that promote maritime safety and security, protect the environment, and safeguard seafarers. Transport Canada is an active member of the Seafarer’s Welfare Board, an important forum for advancing seafarers welfare in Canadian waters. We also work closely with various Canadian seafarers’ unions and with the International Maritime Organization, exchanging valuable insight for seafarers’ safety and wellbeing, both here in Canada and worldwide.

“On June 25, 2011, the International Maritime Organization launched its first annual Day of the Seafarer as a way to recognize the valuable contribution seafarers make to the global economy and to our daily lives. This year’s theme is “Your voyage – then and now, share your journey”. Seafarers are encouraged to share their pictures and stories about their journeys concerning their career paths, life at sea, and their working environment through social media, by using the #SeafarerJourney hashtag. Visit the International Maritime Organizations’ website to learn more.

“To all seafarers, near and far, thank you for your contribution and may your voyages have fair winds and following seas.”
