Minister of Transport clears Santa Claus and reindeer for travel in Canadian airspace

News release

December 24, 2025    Ottawa, ON    Transport Canada

Today, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, has announced the North Pole’s most famous resident, Santa Claus, and his crew of nine reindeer have passed Transport Canada’s rigorous certification and inspection process. They are officially cleared for travel in Canadian airspace.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister phoned Minister MacKinnon to remind him of his important role in maintaining a safe and secure aviation sector, as millions of Canadian children eagerly await Santa’s arrival from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

Each year, Transport Canada’s Civil Aviation Safety Inspectors make the trip up north to examine Santa’s sleigh. This year’s inspections include checks on communications, navigation and safety checks, de-icing systems and landing gear. Inspectors also confirmed that all reindeer harnesses were properly secured and that Rudolph’s nose was shining at its holly-jolly brightest to guide the way.

Transport Canada is proud to help ensure safe and efficient holiday travel for all and wishes all Canadians a joyful and safe holiday season.

“I’m delighted to authorize Santa and his crew for travel in Canadian airspace. As Minister of Transport, ensuring a safe and efficient aviation system is a responsibility I take seriously, especially at this magical time of year. Transport Canada will be working around the clock to make sure Santa and his reindeer have a safe and jolly trip as they deliver presents to children across our country. I wish all Canadians, from coast-to-coast-to-coast, a Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season.

Quick facts

  • Follow Santa and his crew’s journey on the NORAD Tracks Santa website and on X (formerly Twitter), through the hashtag #NoradTracksSanta

  • Aviation safety rules don’t only apply to Santa and his reindeer! If you’re planning to fly your drone at night, make sure you know the safety rules for drones. Your drone must be equipped with lights to avoid scaring the reindeer or worse, colliding with Santa’s sled or other aircraft. If you don’t fly your drone safely, you may land yourself on top of Santa’s naughty list!
