About the Communications Community Office

At the Communications Community Office (CCO), we help communications professionals in the Government of Canada enhance their skills and abilities and grow their careers with a variety of services, including regular learning events, access to the latest communications news and information, and help in connecting and networking with colleagues.

Mandate

Our mandate is to provide tools and mechanisms to:

We work closely with departments, central agencies, communities of practice, functional communities, as well as public and private sector partners at home and abroad to fulfill our mandate.

We also stay on top of the latest trends and best practices, which we share with the community, through learning events, our newsletter, and in online collaborative spaces.

Services

The CCO is funded by communications branches from departments and agencies across the Government of Canada. That support allows us to offer a variety of services to help communicators stay on top of changes in the field and reach their professional goals.

Learning Events

We research, plan and organize regular learning events throughout the year, offered in person and via webcast or WebEx, covering topics relevant to the community. Often, these events focus on a practitioner sharing their experience, knowledge and lessons learned about a new approach, tool or challenge, ensuring that knowledge is shared within our community. A key event is our annual Learning Day, which brings together hundreds of communicators in the National Capital Region and across the country, to learn, share and network.

News

We are constantly scanning the horizon for the latest news and information about the profession – within our Government of Canada community, across the country and around the world, to bring you CCO News, our monthly newsletter. We are always looking for story ideas and authors from within the community. If you have an idea or would like to contribute content, contact us at info@cco-bcc.gc.ca.

You can stay in touch by following us on Twitter @ccobcc to connect with colleagues, share best practices and discuss challenges and opportunities.

Tools and Research

We seek and collect the newest tools and research to help you do your job better and understand the environment in which you work. Do you have a new template, tool or study that has helped you? Share it with us and we will make it available to the community.

Networks and Collaboration

Networking is a great way to gain and share knowledge. The CCO connects you to networks and communities within the Government of Canada, across the country and around the world to help you benefit from the experiences of others. We also provide access to interactive collaborative spaces such as our @ccobcc Twitter account so you can easily reach out to CCO staff and colleagues to discuss topics of most interest to you.

Career Resources

We have a variety of resources to help you assess and enhance your competencies and build your performance agreement and learning plan to support your career aspirations. We also offer a unique professional development opportunity through our Mentoring Series, which enables you to work one-on-one with an experienced communicator to support and guide you in meeting your career objectives.

Governance

Our Steering Committee, made up of Directors, Directors General (DGs) and Assistant Deputy Ministers (ADMs) of Communications, provides direction and helps us set priorities. Members come from large, medium and small organizations, with at least one representative from the regions.

The CCO participates in meetings with the Privy Council Office (PCO) and DGs of Communications to remain in touch with the top issues facing the community and to obtain quick feedback from DGs on initiatives, plans and priorities.

We also consult regularly with executives, managers and individual practitioners to ensure our services are aligned with the needs of the community.

In many ways, CCO is a sum of the various parts that make up our community. We often rely on the efforts of volunteers to deliver our services. Community members regularly share knowledge with their colleagues at our learning events, write articles for CCO News, and suggest stories, tools and research to share.
