Veterans Remembrance Tributes take place in Calgary and Hamilton

November 15, 2015 – Calgary – Veterans Affairs Canada

The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today joined Canadian Football League (CFL) officials, Veterans and thousands of football fans in the Veterans Remembrance Tribute at the Grey Cup Western Division semi-final playoff game in Calgary. Bob Bratina, Member of Parliament for Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, represented the Minister of Veterans Affairs at the mirror event for the Eastern Division semi-final playoff game in Hamilton, Ontario.

Held each year on the second Sunday in November, these annual ceremonies, which kick off the Canadian Football League semi-finals, demonstrate the unique partnership between the league and Veterans Affairs Canada, which began in 2008. The annual pre-game ceremony features a colour party, honour guard, and a moment of silence for Canada’s Veterans and still serving Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

Quick Facts

  • Organized by the Canadian Football League, in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, the semi-final games feature a pre-game ceremony, known as the Veterans Remembrance Tribute, as well as the placement of the Canada Remembers logo, with permission of the Royal Canadian Legion, around the football field and on each player’s helmet.
  • The World Wars Commemoration period (2014-2020) marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War.
  • During Veterans’ Week (November 5–11), Canadians honoured Canada’s Veterans by sharing thoughts, photos or special memories of loved ones who served, on social media at #RememberThem.
