The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement marking Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah):
“Today, on Yom HaShoah, we stand with the Jewish people to honour all who endured the horrors of the Holocaust: those who perished, those who survived, and those who fought to end the brutal Nazi regime.
“It is our duty as Canadians—and citizens of the larger global community—to keep these stories at the forefront of our minds, ensuring that future generations will remember precisely what happened.
“We must always stand together in defiance of anti-Semitism, radical hatred, xenophobia, and prejudice in all forms—each of us has this responsibility.
“On many occasions throughout our nation’s history, Canadians have helped defend those who could not defend themselves; many have given their lives to do so. We continue to do our utmost to ensure that the Holocaust will never be forgotten, nor repeated.
“We cannot – and will not – forget them: the millions who died in concentration camps, and those who survived but were forever changed by the events of the Second World War.
“Lest we forget.”
