Minister of Veterans Affairs to attend commemorative events in Italy for the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign

Ottawa The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, will travel to Italy to participate in events commemorating the contributions of Canadian soldiers during the Second World War’s Italian Campaign, a key chapter in the Allied liberation of Europe. The Minister will attend events in Italy from May 31 until June 2, 2019, to honour the brave Canadians who gave their lives in the defence of peace and freedom.  

Events:

May 31 – Commemorative plaque dedication at the Canadian Embassy in Rome, Italy

June 1 – Wreath laying at the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery

June 1 – “Canadian Heroes Square” street renaming in Ortona, Italy

June 2 – Commemorative ceremony at the Cassino War Cemetery

As well as the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign, 2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the end of Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan, and the 75th anniversaries of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Scheldt during the Second World War.
