Government of Canada Strengthens Maritime Tourism in Prince Rupert

News Release

April 9, 2016 – Prince Rupert, British Columbia – Western Economic Diversification Canada

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, congratulates the City of Prince Rupert on the grand opening of the new marina at Cow Bay.

Through the Western Diversification Program, Western Economic Diversification Canada provided $2 million to the City of Prince Rupert to construct a new marina and public breakwater at Cow Bay. The new marina has the capacity to attract large-scale marine tourism traffic to the North Coast region and become an integral part of marine tourism infrastructure developed along the B.C. coast. The marina will also support First Nations’ tourism activities and regional transportation needs by providing infrastructure for water taxis, chartered fishing vessels, and other water-based activities. As much of the waterfront in Prince Rupert is used by the industrial sector, the new public breakwater will enhance the community’s access to the water and provide a space for local residents to enjoy aquatic activities for years to come.

Quick Facts

  • The City of Prince Rupert was established in 1910 and is part of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District. The total population of Prince Rupert is approximately 13,000 and the coastal city is one of two port cities in British Columbia.
  • The Western Diversification Program is one of the programs through which Western Economic Diversification Canada makes strategic investments in initiatives that enhance and strengthen the economy of Western Canada.
