The Government of Canada Invests in Educational and Economic Opportunities for Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia
News Release
April 26, 2016 – Vancouver, British Columbia – Western Economic Diversification Canada
Today, Jonathan Wilkinson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Member of Parliament for North Vancouver, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced $2,544,057 in funding for five projects through Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada’s Strategic Partnerships Initiative (SPI) to support educational and economic opportunities for First Nation communities in British Columbia.
The Strategic Partnerships Initiative is an innovative program designed to increase Aboriginal participation in complex economic development opportunities, particularly in the natural resource sectors where projects are emerging at an unprecedented rate across the country. Before the SPI, funding decisions were typically made individually by federal departments and agencies and in isolation of a broader strategy.
Quick Facts
- With 15 partnering federal departments and agencies and shared terms and conditions, the SPI enables federal partners to more easily work together to prioritize and sequence investments, assess and make project approvals, leverage non-federal sources of funding, monitor progress and report on outcomes.
- The First Nations Technology Council is an enterprising non-profit, mandated by BC’s 203 First Nations communities to advance full utilization of connected and digital technologies.
- The six Indigenous communities that make up the Treaty 8 Tribal Association include: Doig River First Nation, Halfway River First Nation, Prophet River First Nation, Saulteau First Nations, West Moberly First Nation and Fort Nelson First Nation.
- The Prince George Aboriginal Business Development Association provides a full spectrum of culturally and client-focused, business and economic development services to assist Aboriginal individuals, organizations and communities to access economic opportunities.
- The Prince George Nechako Aboriginal Employment and Training Association is a registered training institution that works collaboratively with First Nation Chiefs, employment practitioners and industry partners to help Indigenous students acquire the skills needed to participate in Northern British Columbia’s labour market
- The Gitxsan Development Corporation develops economic opportunities for the Gitxsan people that blend the traditional governance of the Gitxsan with the contemporary needs of global business.
