Cando Conference helps promote economic development in Indigenous Communities

News release

October 24, 2018 – Enoch, Alberta – Western Economic Diversification Canada

The Government of Canada is committed to working in partnership with Indigenous communities, organizations, and individuals to build relationships that contribute to greater understanding and enhance Indigenous economic growth.

Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced an investment of $10,000 to support the 25th annual Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) national conference.

The Cando conference will enable participants to learn about best practices, develop networks, and better understand economic development challenges in Indigenous communities. The conference agenda includes a national youth panel and women in business panel, which will provide an inclusive and diverse perspective on economic development.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada released 94 Calls to Action designed to improve the relationship between Canada and its First Peoples. The Cando national conference is an opportunity to build on an existing national network of best practices to support Indigenous participation in the economy.
