Fifth anniversary of Women and Gender Equality Canada
On December 13, 2018, new legislation created the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE), transforming the departmental agency Status of Women Canada (1976-2018) into an official department of the Government of Canada. This included an expanded mandate to advance equality for sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
WAGE’s fifth anniversary (December 13, 2023) is an opportunity to:
- highlight the significant achievements and accomplishments that we have made to advance gender equality in Canada over the past five years, and
- reconfirm our commitment to addressing persistent gender equality gaps in our country
Check out the statement to mark the fifth anniversary of WAGE, and the video on WAGE’s fifth anniversary from the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, which commemorates the creation of Canada’s first stand-alone federal department dedicated to advancing equality.
