Security at Pride Festivals

The Government of Canada recognizes the vital role Pride festivals play in celebrating inclusion and strengthening 2SLGBTQI+ communities across the country.  Pride events must be spaces where 2SLGBTQI+ communities and their allies can feel safe to be their authentic selves.

Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) advances safety and security at Pride festivals across the country to address rising hate targeting 2SLGBTQI+. By promoting inclusion, preventing gender-based violence, and strengthening safety and security for 2SLGBTQI+ communities, WAGE helps build communities where people are safe, respected, and able to fully participate in society.

Funded organizations

The Government of Canada has provided $6.3 million since 2023 to Fierté Canada Pride to address security needs at Pride festivals nationwide. This funding is distributed by Fierté Canada Pride to 2SLGBTQI+ organizations that organize Pride festivals to ensure that these events are safer and more accessible through infrastructure, training, and staffing support.

Additionally, Canada is supporting initiatives for 2SLGBTQI+ communities through investments of $54.6 million over five years, with $10.9 million ongoing. This includes $7.5 million over five years, with $1.5 million ongoing, to continue helping Pride festivals address ongoing security needs.
