Statement by The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women on Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement on Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women: 

“Today we remember 14 young women who lost their lives in the shocking attack at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. They died because they were women.

As we reflect on this tragic event, we are reminded that violence continues to be a reality for many Canadian women and girls. This is particularly true for Indigenous women, who are three times more likely than other Canadian women to experience violence.

This is unacceptable. Living a life free of violence is a basic human right and one that all Canadian women should expect.

Today, we remind Canadians that violence against women and girls is not just a women’s issue — it’s everyone’s issue and we all have an important role to play. Looking the other way is not an option.

I urge all Canadians to ask themselves:  “What will I do to help end violence against women and girls?” Together, our actions can make Canada safer, more respectful and supportive for all Canadians.”
