Government of Canada welcomes the Gender Equality Week Act

Statement

June 21, 2018

Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement:

“Today, Bill C-309, the Gender Equality Week Act, received Royal Assent. This legislation designates the fourth week in September in every year as Gender Equality Week. I salute the work of Sven Spengemann, Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Lakeshore, for his leadership in introducing this legislation. This is the difference one person can make!

“Our Government continues to make this a key priority because gender equality helps to grow the economy for everyone. This week will provide all Canadians with an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of our progress while reflecting on the necessary work that remains to ensure that all Canadians can reach their full potential, regardless of gender.

“I am looking forward to participating in the first ever Gender Equality Week from September 23 to 29, 2018, along with Canadians from coast to coast to coast as they engage in conversations and activities to advance gender equality in their communities.”
