Backgrounder
July 17, 2026 – Halifax, Nova Scotia — Women and Gender Equality Canada
Six organizations across Canada will receive $1,418,028 through Women and Gender Equality Canada’s Gender-based Violence Program. These investments will support projects that help prevent human trafficking, improve services for victims and survivors, and protect people who may be at greater risk of being trafficked or exploited.
Funding is being provided for the following projects:

St. John’s, NL
Scope of project: Regional
Project Name: SEA of Youth
Project description: This project is dedicated to preventing human trafficking and online exploitation among newcomer youth. It will provide culturally appropriate education, youth-focused supports and information on online and digital safety.

Scope of project: Regional
Project Name: Increasing CHV’s Capacity to Serve Trafficked Youth, Phase II
Project description: The project will scale their No Wrong Door Approach to strengthen the GBV sector, reduce barriers and improve access to trauma-informed services for youth at-risk of or experiencing human trafficking and exploitation.

Project Name: Professionals Working with Survivors of Human Trafficking
Project description: This project will support the expansion and dissemination of its guide for frontline workers to identify, prevent and respond to human trafficking.

Scope of project: Regional
Project Name: EmpowerMen – Engaging men and boys to prevent sexual exploitation and sex trafficking
Project description: This project engages men and boys in preventing the sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people. It will focus on newcomer and youth populations, examine how online platforms can contribute to gender-based violence, and work with Manitoba businesses to promote workplace practices that help prevent exploitation.
Additional funding amount: $105,550 (initial funding amount $478,428)

Project Name: Gender-Based Violence from Human Trafficking to MMIWG: Removing the Silos
Project description: This project will support Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit people, and families province-wide through prevention, education, culturally grounded approaches, and strengthen community responses to gender-based violence, human trafficking, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Project Name: Coordinated Alignment to Support Exit (CASE) 2.0
Project description: This project will strengthen community responses to human trafficking and sexual exploitation through training, resource development and a public awareness campaign.
