Montréal, Quebec, May 17, 2007 Acting on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada and Minister responsible for the Montréal region, today announced that the firm SCL Medtech Inc. will receive $100,000 in repayable funding to implement a strategy to commercialize generation chambers for occupational asthma screening and industrial research on domestic and foreign markets.
"Canada's new government is attuned to the issues associated with the development of the life sciences cluster. Our goal is to mobilize this critical sector for the metropolitan Montréal area. To that end, the latest federal budget contains a number of measures that touch research and business support. Our funding of SCL Medtech clearly illustrates our government's determination to help strengthen this industry and bolster the competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses by helping them increase their innovation capabilities, adopt leading-edge technologies and develop new markets," stated Minister Fortier.
The life sciences sector substantially improves the quality of life of citizens and contributes to the flourishing of current and future generations. The sector plays an important role in the health and international competitiveness of the Canadian economy. In 2005, the life sciences sector accounted for more than 40,500 direct jobs in metropolitan Montréal.
SCL Medtech was founded by two dynamic young entrepreneurs, Simon Leblond and Simon Caron. Operating in the development and production of specialized laboratory tools, the firm has acquired particular expertise in the field of aerosol and gas generation and detection for a number of healthcare, environmental, industrial and research laboratory applications.
"For the past three years, SCL Medtech has been using its expertise to benefit occupational asthma sufferers by developing tools that make it easier to diagnose this condition. Be it in relation to our consulting services, personalized laboratory equipment or products, our mission is to constantly strive to offer our clients innovative new approaches and added value. In addition to increasing our company's capabilities and flexibility, the project we are undertaking with the support of Canada Economic Development will enable us to expand into new markets," noted SCL Medtech General Manager Simon Leblond.
