QUÉBEC CITY, December 19, 2007 - The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, today announced funding for eligible publishers in Quebec.Funding of more than $14.7 million will allow publishers to intensify their promotional activities and break into new markets, as well as increase their financial viability."The Government of Canada is proud to support Quebec's publishers, who showcase the talent of our authors and illustrators while contributing to our dynamic cultural scene," said Minister Verner. "Our authors and publishers are symbols of our creativity and innovative spirit, and they contribute to the vitality of our culture and economy.""The Association nationale des éditeurs de livres feels that Canadian Heritage's Book Publishing Industry Development Program offers essential and irreplaceable support for the Canadian book publishing industry," said Gaston Bellemare, President of the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres. "We thank Minister Verner and the program staff for their hard work and for giving us this news release as a Christmas gift."The Government of Canada has provided this funding for the 2007-2008 fiscal year under the Aid to Publishers and Supply Chain Initiative components of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program.
