TORONTO (ONTARIO), le 1er février 2008 — La leader du gouvernement au Sénat et secrétaire d’État (Aînés) Marjory Le Breton a annoncé aujourd’hui, au nom du ministre des Ressources humaines et du Développement social, l’honorable Monte Solberg, le financement de 281 projets dans le cadre du programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés (PNHA), pour que les aînés de l’Ontario aient la possibilité de participer pleinement à la vie de leur collectivité et d’y jouer un rôle de premier plan.
Lors d’une allocution au Villa Colombo Services for Seniors, le secrétaire d’État LeBreton a annoncé qu’un montant total de 6 014 538 $ sera versé pour appuyer 112 collectivités en Ontario. Cela comprend un financement de 25 000 $ pour le projet Villa Colombo Community Education and Wellness Centre à Toronto.

Le gouvernement du Canada reconnaît que les aînés ont aidé à construire ce pays et veulent continuer d’en faire un endroit où il fait bon vivre. »
Dans le budget de 2007, le gouvernement du Canada a annoncé un investissement supplémentaire de 10 millions de dollars par année pour deux nouveaux volets au programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés, notamment en vue de sensibiliser davantage la population aux mauvais traitements infligés aux aînés et de fournir une aide à l’immobilisation pour améliorer les installations et l’équipement servant aux programmes pour les aînés actuellement en vigueur. Les projets financés dans le cadre de ces deux nouveaux volets seront annoncés au printemps de 2008.
Le gouvernement fédéral s’est aussi appliqué à répondre aux besoins des aînés au moyen d’une série de mesures importantes, dont les suivantes :
Il a créé le Conseil national des aînés pour donner des avis au gouvernement sur des enjeux d’importance pour les personnes âgées du Canada.
Il a permis à 1,6 million de personnes âgées à faible revenu de bénéficier d’une augmentation de leurs prestations mensuelles dans le cadre du Supplément de revenu garanti (SRG) et de ne présenter qu’une seule demande pour recevoir le SRG. Pour autant qu’elles produisent une déclaration de revenus chaque année, ces personnes n’auront pas à remplir une nouvelle demande.
Il a accordé des allégements fiscaux de plus de 1 milliard de dollars pour les aînés et les pensionnés du Canada dans le budget de 2007.
Il a permis aux aînés de laisser fructifier leurs épargnes dans des régimes enregistrés pour la retraite et des régimes enregistrés d’épargne-retraite pendant deux années de plus, soit jusqu’à 71 ans.
Il a haussé le montant que les aînés peuvent déclarer dans le cadre du crédit en raison de l’âge sur leur déclaration de revenus de 2007. En payant moins d’impôt sur le revenu, les aînés épargnent davantage.
Depuis son lancement, le programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés a financé plus de 2 600 projets partout au pays, lesquels incitent les aînés à faire preuve de leadership et à mettre leur énergie et leurs compétences au service de projets dont bénéficient nos collectivités. Programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés
Partout au Canada, le programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés (PNHA) voit à ce que les gens âgés puissent profiter de la qualité de vie de leur collectivité et y contribuer en menant une vie sociale active. Cela est rendu possible grâce au financement de projets communautaires qui permettent aux aînés de transmettre leurs compétences, leur sagesse et leur expérience, tout en brisant leur isolement.
Fort du succès du programme Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés, dans le budget de 2007 le gouvernement du Canada a accru de 10 millions de dollars par année les fonds alloués au programme afin de fournir une aide à l’immobilisation pour améliorer les installations et l’équipement servant aux programmes pour les aînés actuellement en vigueur et de sensibiliser davantage la population du pays aux mauvais traitements infligés aux personnes âgées. Ces fonds portent le budget annuel total du programme à 35 millions de dollars.
Par conséquent, Nouveaux Horizons pour les aînés offre maintenant aux organismes trois types de financement :
Volet actuel
Financement pour la participation communautaire et le leadership : ces fonds sont destinés à des projets communautaires partout au Canada. Ces projets incitent les aînés à continuer de jouer un rôle important dans leur collectivité en aidant les personnes dans le besoin, en faisant preuve de leadership et en faisant profiter les autres de leur expérience et de leurs compétences.
Nouveaux volets de financement
Financement pour l’aide à l’immobilisation : ces fonds aideront les organismes à but non lucratif à améliorer leurs installations et leur équipement servant aux activités et aux programmes qui sont actuellement offerts aux aînés et qui leur permettent de continuer à mener une vie active dans leur collectivité.
Financement pour la sensibilisation aux mauvais traitements envers les aînés : ces fonds permettront à des organismes à but non lucratif et à des coalitions de sensibiliser la population à l’échelle nationale ou régionale au sujet des mauvais traitements que subissent les personnes âgées. Grâce à ces fonds, de nouvelles ressources éducatives sur la violence et la négligence envers les aînés seront créées afin d’améliorer la qualité de vie et la sécurité des personnes âgées.
