(Chelsey) Hi, I’m Chelsey Rothwell for Defence Team News. The Canadian-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in Latvia continues their deployment despite the new challenges presented by COVID-19.

We spoke to the Commander of Task Force Latvia at Camp Adazi about the measures being taken to mitigate the spread and how the battlegroup will operate moving forward.

(Col Laforest) I think, as soldiers, that’s what we’re trained to do. We’re trained to disperse the force when we’re facing an enemy. And we’re trained as well to reunite, as a single force, when things matter the most (i.e when we need to operate). So this is exactly what we’re doing right now.

The health and safety of our members is of the utmost importance. We need to be able to fight another day. So that’s why right now we’re taking all the measures to make sure that we protect the force through the recommended measures, including cleaning, disinfecting everything that we touch, everything that we work with.

The key point is to stress the fact that we’ve got first duties to protect ourselves, our allies, as well as the families against that unknown enemy that we’re facing right now.

One of the first things we’ve done was actually to reduce our presence within the quarters here in Latvia to make sure that we can lessen the density as much as we can of people being together at one place at one time.

(C) Before we go, those looking to apply or who have already applied for positions with CANSOFCOM should be aware of recent changes to the recruiting process due to COVID-19.

Changes include revised physical fitness testing, new submission deadlines, and a new protocol to allow correspondence via civilian email and phone.
