Ottawa and Quebec are launching a new funding program to support the growth of food processing companies
December 15, 2017 – Saint-Félicien, Québec – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
The governments of Canada and Quebec are joining forces to enhance support to Quebec food processing companies that wish to increase the presence of their products in the Quebec market.
Richard Hébert, Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Jean, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Laurent Lessard, Minister of the Quebec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), are announcing the launch of the new Market Access Program, which has a $1.75 million budget. The program will give food processing companies with less than $50 million in annual sales an opportunity to carry out marketing activities within the various Quebec distribution networks.
The Market Access Program is funded by the governments of Canada and Quebec under the Growing Forward 2 agreement, which runs until March 31, 2018.
“The investment announced today will help support the growth of and innovation of Canada’s agri-food sector. The Market Access Program is one more tool to help Quebec food processing companies capture new markets, ensure their growth, and create well-paid jobs for farmers and their families.”
- Richard Hébert, Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Jean
“The Quebec government would like to strengthen the performance of food processing companies in the area of marketing. This new program will give them an opportunity to expand their presence in Quebec hotel, restaurant, institutional and retail distribution networks, and thus further diversify their markets.”
- Laurent Lessard, Minister of the Quebec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
The food and beverage processing industry is a cornerstone of the Quebec economy. Around 70% of the products from Quebec agriculture and fishing activities are purchased by Quebec food processors.
The Market Access Program boosts the support that is already offered to food processing companies. It will enable Quebec companies to compete with growing competition, and it will foster their growth. In addition, it will help increase consumer awareness of Quebec food products.
