1 Service Battalion

1 Service Battalion provides close and general support to units throughout 3^rd Canadian Division. 1 Service Battalion is comprised of a battalion headquarters and four functional companies:

• Transportation Company includes a headquarters, a resource management cell, two transport platoons and a movements platoon.
• Supply Company includes a headquarters, Garrison Support Services, a Decontamination Platoon and Stocks Platoon.
• Maintenance Company includes a headquarters with a control office, an Artisan Platoon and Vehicle Platoon.
• Administration Company includes a headquarters, a risk management cell, Padre, a resource management cell, Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, Messing Section, Transport Section, Maintenance Section and Signals Troop.

Each of the functional companies provides institutional Army support to its dependencies.

From these functional companies, Forward Support Groups (FSGs) are force generated to support operations domestically or internationally. 1 Service Battalion is a large and robust force generation Combat Service Support unit capable of providing two FSGs in support of operations at any given time.

1 Service Battalion was officially formed on September 1,1968. This is this date that the Battalion uses as the basis of its "birthday" celebrations although June 14, 1968 is the date that the Canadian Forces uses to mark the birthday of all Service Battalions.

For more than forty years the unit has served the Forces with distinction, however, the Battalion’s roots stretch much further back in time. In fact, they can be traced back to the beginning of the 20^th century. Specifically, the lineage of the three functional companies in the unit, Transportation, Supply and Maintenance, can be associated with three of the former service corps of the Canadian Army.
