2 Service Battalion provides second-line Combat Service Support to 2 CMBG, including Transportation, Supply, and Maintenance to assigned formations for domestic and deployed operations. It also provides essential institutional support to 4^th Canadian Division Support Base Petawawa lodger units.

On 1 October 1968, most of the support units of 2 Combat Group were combined into a single combat service support unit, called 2 Service Battalion (2 Svc Bn). Incorporating long-standing, honourable and well-recognized units, many of whom had seen service in the Second World War and Korea, 2 Service Battalion was able to build upon a proud history.

The following units joined to form three of the current functioning companies in the Battalion:Supply Company Ancestry 42 Camp Ordnance Railhead, Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps 2 Ordnance Field Park, Royal Canadian Ordnance CorpsTransportation Company Ancestry 2 Transportation Company- Royal Canadian Army Service CorpsMaintenance Company Ancestry 209 Workshop, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) 2 Field Workshop, RCEME. The organization of 2 Service Battalion has continued to develop and evolve in response to the demands made upon it. The demands made upon the Battalion in its first few years by 2 Combat Group were minimal and the Battalion drifted towards the Base side of its dual role.
