Brigadier-General Stéphane Masson started his career with the Canadian Forces as a reservist in 1991 with the 6ième Régiment d’artillerie de Campagne (6 RAC) in Quebec City, and in 2003 he joined the Regular Force.

He had the privilege to hold command appointments at every rank level. In 2008, as a Major he took command of Q Battery (surveillance and target acquisition) in 5 ième Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada (5 RALC) at CFB Valcartier. In 2012, as a Lieutenant-Colonel he was assigned as Commandant of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School and the Artillery Branch Deputy Director at CFB Gagetown. After nearly three years in command, he was assigned to the Army Headquarters in Ottawa as Deputy Director for the Army Force Development. In 2016, as a Colonel he was assigned as the Chief of Staff of the 2nd Division and the Joint Task Force (East) in Montreal. In 2019, was assigned at the J3 Expeditionary at Canadian Joint Operation Command Headquarters. His subsequent posting as Base Commander, Canadian Forces Base Kingston, was completed in 2022. BGen Masson assumed command of 5th Canadian Division on July 16th, 2022.  

BGen Masson served on four operational missions abroad - two in Bosnia-Herzegovina, one in Afghanistan and one in Egypt. In 1995, with the Headquarters of the 5th Canadian Multinational Brigade of the NATO Implementation of Force (IFOR); in 2002, as a liaison officer for the European Multinational Division in support of the NATO Stabilization Force (SFOR); in 2008, as the Current Operations Chief with the Joint Task Force Afghanistan in Kandahar, and in 2019 as the Commander Task Force El-Gorah in Egypt and the Chief of Liaison (CJ9) for the Multinational Force and Observers. In addition, he also participated in several domestic response operations.

BGen Masson graduated from the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College, the Joint Command and Staff Program and the National Security Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Quebec, a Masters in Defence Studies and is currently completing a Master in Public Administration with the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) Kingston.

BGen Masson and his wife have three children. His hobbies include exercise, guitar, reading and travelling.
