United Nations Staff Officer Course (UNSOC)

The UNSOC prepares participants for deployment as UN military staff officers within an operation or mission area headquarters. It includes all UN pre-requisite training material: Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (CPTMs); Specialized Training Material for military staff officers of the UN (UNSO STM); and, identified additional material.
AIM
The aim of this training is to prepare participants for deployment as UN military staff officers within an operational headquarters.
SCOPE
UNSOC, delivers over a period of 15 training days (three calendar weeks) the UN mandated Core Pre-deployment Training Material (CPTM) and Staff Officer Specialized Training Material (SO STM), followed by an abstract of the Canadian Armed Forces Operational Planning Process, as well as other staff training including briefing techniques. The course curriculum was designed to provide participants with the skills needed to perform staff duties within a UN operational-level headquarters. The UNSOC is currently overseen with international training coordinated by the Directorate of Military Training (DMTC) and in cooperation and supported by the Canadian Army Command and Staff College (CACSC) who is responsible for course management and delivery of training. In 2018, Canada sought UN training recognition certification for UNSOC, which was obtained in May 2020.
PREREQUISITES
The target audience for this course is comprised of staff officers who are (or could be potentially) deployed in Peace Support Operations.
In order to be selected for this training, participants should:
- Be employed or selected for employment in a future UN deployment;
- Possess basic instructional techniques;
- For officers, possess the rank of Captain to LCol.
TRAINING DURATION
UNSOC consists of 15 training days, over three calendar weeks. Training days are based on 7 x 50 min periods/day.
SCHEDULING
Training will be scheduled by DMTC, in close coordination with the host nation training institution, in order to meet training requirements.
TRAINING DELIVERY
UNSOC is delivered in cooperation with a partner nation who DMTC works with to coordinate the delivery of training from a team of Staff from both DMTC,CACSC and partner nation at a training centre within the partner nation.
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION
The language of instruction shall be English, the host nation may incorporate translators, by level of participant language abilities.
