Biolantic

In healthcare, every second counts. And so does every piece of equipment.

From the devices that help doctors make critical diagnoses, to the technology used to deliver life-saving treatments, modern healthcare depends on equipment that's safe, accurate and ready when it matters most.

But what happens when that equipment needs maintenance, repairs or a little extra attention to keep it running?

This is where Biolantic, a Newfoundland and Labrador-based company, is making a big impact.

Founded in 2014, Biolantic specializes in keeping essential medical technology operating safely and reliably, providing everything from preventive maintenance and calibration to technical repairs and equipment lifecycle management.

"Our company is part of the backbone of medical technology in our healthcare system," says Mike Loder, Managing Director of Biolantic.

And what began as a solution to a challenge close to home has grown into something much bigger: a Newfoundland and Labrador company with an expanding Atlantic Canadian presence and national ambitions.

Putting healthcare innovation into motion

Newfoundland and Labrador knows a thing or two about geography creating challenges.

For healthcare facilities, particularly those in smaller and rural communities, accessing specialized technical support can mean higher costs, longer wait times and equipment sitting out of service.

Biolantic saw an opportunity to change that.

Rather than relying entirely on expertise from outside the province, the company began building specialized biomedical technology services right here at home.

Today, Biolantic supports some of the world's largest medical device manufacturers, helping keep equipment operating in healthcare facilities from downtown Toronto to St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Regardless of where a patient lives, they deserve access to the same high standard of care, and reliable medical technology plays an important role in making that possible," says Loder.

Big ambitions beyond the Atlantic

As Biolantic grew, its team noticed something interesting.

The challenges facing healthcare providers in Newfoundland and Labrador weren't unique to the province. Hospitals and medical equipment manufacturers across Canada were dealing with many of the same issues.

The opportunity was bigger than they initially imagined.

"There comes a point in a company's growth where you realize the biggest limitation is no longer market demand, but your capacity to respond to it," explains Loder.

After expanding throughout Atlantic Canada, Biolantic formally launched its national expansion initiative in 2025, setting its sights on becoming a leader in healthcare technology management.

The company has since invested in specialized facilities, advanced testing equipment and internationally recognized quality systems, achieving ISO 9001 certification along the way.

It's also embracing automation, including biomedical testing technology developed by Canadian manufacturer Datrend Systems Inc. These tools help streamline testing and documentation, allowing technologists to focus on highly skilled technical work.

The company's growth is also creating opportunities for skilled professionals to build specialized careers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"We're not limited to serving our immediate geographic market. With the right people, infrastructure, and investment, we can build expertise here and deliver its value nationally,” explains Loder. “That's something our team takes real pride in.”

Giving medical equipment a second chance

Biolantic's work isn't just about keeping equipment running. Sometimes, it's about giving it a whole new lease in life.

Hospitals regularly replace medical equipment, but that doesn't always mean the older equipment has reached the end of its useful life. Through careful inspection, repair, refurbishment and testing, Biolantic can help return suitable equipment to service. That means less waste, better use of valuable resources and more opportunities for healthcare organizations to recover value from retired equipment.

Some equipment can even find a second purpose through donations to charitable organizations or educational institutions, supporting international healthcare missions and hands-on learning opportunities.

"Every time we take a piece of medical equipment that's been sitting unused in a hospital hallway and bring it back into service, we're making a difference," says Loder.

It's a win for healthcare providers, a win for sustainability and, ultimately, a win for patients.

Building a healthier future, right here at home

Biolantic isn't slowing down. With plans to expand its national footprint, grow its team and develop more specialized services within Canada, the company is working toward a future where healthcare providers can rely more on Canadian expertise.

ACOA has supported Bioatlantic at several stages of its growth, helping the company strengthen its operations, expand its technical capabilities and build systems needed to pursue larger markets.

"ACOA has been more than a source of financial assistance. They've been part of creating the conditions for a Newfoundland and Labrador company to pursue much larger opportunities and become a national leader,” notes Loder.

For Biolantic, the goal is more than expanding a business. It's about creating skilled jobs, strengthening Canada's healthcare technology capabilities and demonstrating what Newfoundland and Labrador companies can achieve.

Because the equipment Biolantic services today could one day be used to care for us, our families or our friends.

And that's something worth getting right.
