The strength of community

Leticia Anjos, Junior Economic Development Officer, Nova Scotia

“The sense of community in Atlantic Canada is so powerful. I noticed it immediately when moving here, and it’s even more apparent now in my role at ACOA. We are as engaged and committed as any active member of the community.”

And Leticia Anjos knows a few things about the importance of fostering a community, having lived in three countries – Brazil, Argentina, and now Canada.

Joining ACOA in 2021, just three months after moving to Nova Scotia with her husband and two children, Leticia says her role as a Junior Economic Development Officer within the Nova Scotia Communities and Inclusive Growth unit has shaped the way she views Atlantic Canada and its potential for growth.

Leticia’s role involves delivering funding programs to support projects that will benefit communities and contribute to the local economy in the short and long term. She works mainly with non-profit organizations. Her degree in Statistics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Business Administration Accounting diploma from the Nova Scotia Community College – where she received the Highest Recognition Award for High Standing - has allowed the self-professed lover of math to delve deeper into many of the tasks she performs, such as preparing and reviewing reports, and understanding clients’ financials.

She views her role as one element of a team “where we all come together to make a difference to the local economy that can be witnessed in each community and each sector. Some are tiny changes that will certainly lead to great outcomes in the coming months or years. Others are big changes that are already contributing to the growing momentum occurring across Atlantic Canada.”

For Leticia, ACOA is in a great position to help as the region tries to sustain this momentum.

“When it comes to understanding the needs and advantages of the region and providing the right support, ACOA excels, and is one of the most recognized collaborators in the region.”

She attributes part of this success to the internal working culture at ACOA, where she has felt welcomed and supported since she began her role three years ago.

“Being part of a team that supports local businesses and communities, and a team that always works to address our clients’ challenges and embrace their opportunities, fills me with excitement about the future of Atlantic Canada. There are so many incredible people making efforts to elevate the Atlantic region that it can only lead to success and outstanding outcomes.”
