Mark van de Wiel
Meet our team
Mark van de Wiel, Economic Development Officer, Ashdale, N.S.
As someone who grew up in a rural community, Mark van de Wiel understands first-hand the importance of these towns, villages and communities to the economy of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic region. ACOA shares that understanding, he says. “We believe in the value of rural communities.”
Mark works as an economic development officer with the Communities and Inclusive Growth unit. Their focus is to promote rural economic development across the region by helping to improve infrastructure; attract and retain people; develop skills; build partnerships; and support strategic planning. “The focus is on the client,” says Mark. “As a team, we rally around creative ideas and support organizations to grow and develop.”
A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University’s business administration program, Mark worked in forestry and agriculture throughout school and after graduation. However, it was an internship with the Coady International Institute that landed him in Namibia and introduced him to the non-profit sector. “Since then, I have worked in community, economic and business development. Now my role at ACOA helps support businesses and communities as they advance our economy.”
“Working at ACOA,” he adds, “has given me a better glimpse into the businesses and volunteers that make communities tick.”
ACOA’s commitment to local businesses and non-profits is reflected in the people who work for the Agency, notes Mark, who has been with the Agency for eight years. “The people are impressive. They are passionate about their work but also passionate about ACOA and about being a team.”
And like Mark, they embrace life in the communities where they work and live. For Mark, that includes mountain biking, gardening, and making some maple syrup with his kids each year. At this point, however, the maple syrup is not for sale commercially.😊
