Village of Canning Comes Together Under New Roof

News Release

Government of Canada supports infrastructure development in Canning

June 24, 2016 - Canning, N.S. - Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Today, the Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants announced a $450,000 (non-repayable) Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) contribution for the Village of Canning to assist with bringing various community resources together in one convenient location. When constructed, the 19,000 square-foot multi-purpose facility will consist of a community centre, fire station, training room, community boardroom/meeting space, municipal administrative offices, and an emergency comfort station.

The Village of Canning already boasts a generous range of amenities for a relatively small community, including several restaurants, a supermarket, liquor store, library, post office, and art gallery. The construction of this new facility containing multiple community services under one roof will only add to the convenience for area residents and visitors.

The Village of Canning and a dedicated group of volunteers have been working towards the completion of this community infrastructure project for six years. By providing a central focal point for community events and activities, this new facility will support community sustainability.

The Village of Canning received additional financial support for this project from all levels of government: Service Canada, $50,000; the Province of Nova Scotia, $150,000; and, the Municipality of the County of Kings, $280,000.

Most notably, the Village of Canning is contributing $2,000,000—a significant portion of which has been raised by community fundraising.

Quotes:

“Investing in Canada’s communities is not just about economic growth through new infrastructure. It’s also about building communities that Canadians are proud to call home. Multi-purpose spaces like this one are an innovative response to a community’s needs. This new facility blends the needs for community services with areas for creative public use. By investing in infrastructure now—in the projects Canada needs and the community efforts that can build them—growth for the middle class can be secured well into the future.”

 -       The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

“Sustained infrastructure investment is essential to ensuring Canada’s future prosperity and quality of life in rural communities. By placing so many essential services under the same roof, along with a space to be freely used by residents for meetings and events, this multi-purpose facility increases opportunities for collaboration within the Village and its surrounding communities.

 -    The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants

“The heart of many communities lies in the support they provide to their community-based organizations and sporting groups. I am certain the funding toward this new multi-plex will serve to create a strong citizen-centred facility in Canning offering events and programs that will draw interest from throughout Kings County.“

-       MLA Keith Irving on behalf of the Honourable Tony Ince, NS Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage

“The Municipality is elated to be able to support the Village of Canning moving forward on their Multi-Complex. We are pleased to support the project with $280,000 and the transfer of land and look forward to seeing what it will bring to our County.”

 -       Diana Brothers, Warden, Municipality of the County of Kings

“The Village of Canning is thrilled to be able to update its infrastructure by bringing the Canning Volunteer Fire Department, the Canning Village Commission, and community groups together under one roof.  Contributions from the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments, as well as committed efforts by the community have resulted in the announcement of a new multi-complex community centre. The residents of Canning and area take pride in their community and continue to work hard to create a vibrant and welcoming community in rural Nova Scotia.”

-       Everett MacPherson, Chair, Village of Canning
