Big Changes at Broad Cove for Annual Scottish Concert
News Release
Government of Canada supports a well-known entertainment venue in Broad Cove
July 31, 2016– Broad Cove, N.S. – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton – Canso, today announced a $112,500 non-repayable contribution for St. Margaret of Scotland Parish at the 60th annual Broad Cove Scottish Concert. The funding, provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), will contribute to the Parish’s efforts to upgrade the outdoor covered stage and green room building. This important project builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada through a strategic and collaborative approach to tourism.
After 60 years of using the field space next to the church and many temporary renovations to the concert venue, the St. Margaret of Scotland Parish will be constructing a new stage and green room building for its performers. The project includes new concrete foundation; the construction of a new, larger wooden-enclosed stage building; and a new green room building. Landscaping will also be completed, with graveling around the washroom area. These renovations will help to draw a larger audience to the annual Broad Cove Scottish Concert, as well as position the site as an outdoor events venue, for possible rental usage, increasing its ability to host other concerts, art productions, markets, etc.
The Broad Cove Scottish Concert takes place every year on the last Sunday in July and is known as the largest outdoor Scottish concert in Cape Breton. The concert has become a tourist attraction with visitors planning their vacations accordingly. The Broad Cove Scottish Concert is also a time to reflect on our heritage, while supporting Cape Breton’s up and coming artists as well as highlighting established artists, many of whom got their start on the Broad Cove Scottish Concert stage.
The Municipality of the County of Inverness is also providing an $11,000 contribution to this project.
This project builds on the federal and provincial commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada, as announced in July 2016 as part of the Atlantic Growth Strategy.
