Government of Canada Invests in Elite 10 Curling Championships

Port Hawkesbury is proving to be a popular destination in the curling circuit, having hosted the Nationals as recently as 2013, and five Grand Slam of Curling events since 2005. This month, Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling is returning to the Town of Port Hawkesbury, and bringing with it the top ten curling teams from around the world. This event will attract 60 athletes, dozens of personnel from SportsNet, Grand Slam, and international media organizations, as well as a small army of 85 local volunteers.
The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)’s Business Development Program, is assisting the Town of Port Hawkesbury to promote the municipality as a premier sports-tourism destination.
Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, last night announced $87,000 in funding for the Town of Port Hawkesbury to host the 2017 Elite 10 – Grand Slam of Curling, March 16-19, 2017.
Additional support for the project includes $35,000 from the Province of Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
