Land-based fish farm breaking new ground for aquaculture

News Release

Investment supports Nova Scotia-based facility to contribute to clean growth in aquaculture sector

April 21, 2017 – Centre Burlington, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Science that makes the production of environmentally sustainable foods possible is followed with interest by producers, suppliers and consumers around the world.  That is why the Government of Canada is investing

$1 million in Sustainable Fish Farming Limited of Hants County to increase the production of safe, sustainable Atlantic salmon, and to commercialize leading-edge marine water treatment technology.

The support was announced today by the Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), Funding is provided through ACOA’s Business Development Program.

Innovation plays an integral role in the overall competitiveness of the aquaculture sector, and creates better opportunities for seafood producers, businesses and Canadians. Sustainable Fish Farming Limited, in Centre Burlington, is constructing a 300 metric tonne land-based, saltwater grow-out facility, which will bring the company’s total capacity to 500 metric tonnes. This will enable production of Atlantic salmon year-round. The expansion will improve the business’ competitiveness in the seafood sector and make it possible to develop new markets for a product that has already received critical acclaim from restaurateurs. The facility operates a proprietary closed containment system which recirculates water that is entirely free of contaminants, resulting in a sustainable salmon stock that is 100 per cent free of drugs and disease.
