News Release

June 2, 2017 – Yarmouth, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

All Canadians deserve to live in inclusive and vibrant communities where they can connect with their friends and neighbours. Investing in local community infrastructure will improve existing facilities, build stronger community ties and strengthen the middle class and those seeking to join it.

Colin Fraser, Member of Parliament for West Nova, today announced a federal contribution of $73,250 to the Yarmouth County Agricultural Society for the purchase and installation of four portable bleachers at the Yarmouth Exhibition Grounds.  These nine-row, 20-foot-long portable bleachers were built in Atlantic Canada and will be made available for other community events throughout Western Nova Scotia.

Today’s announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). This project is being partly funded through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150). Funding in Atlantic Canada is delivered through ACOA.

In addition to Government of Canada support, the Honourable Zach Churchill, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Yarmouth, also announced today a provincial contribution of $20,000 from the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture.  The Yarmouth County Agricultural Society is also contributing $53,250 towards this project.

These investments, to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, will help create jobs, boost economic activity, strengthen communities and celebrate Canada’s rich heritage and history.

The Government of Canada recognizes that investing in them celebrates our heritage and improves the quality of life of all Canadians. These renewed facilities not only respond to the demand for community infrastructure improvements, but also provide us an opportunity to celebrate the people of this great country."

- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“For 158 years, the Western Nova Scotia Exhibition has promoted our region’s rich agricultural heritage.  Today’s investments will help the Yarmouth County Agricultural Society organize another successful exhibition this summer and for many more summers to come.  The availability of high-quality portable bleachers for other events and festivals in the area will also have a positive impact on the experiences of locals and tourists alike, and help market Western Nova Scotia as a premiere event destination."

- Colin Fraser, Member of Parliament for West Nova

“The Province of Nova Scotia is proud to make this important investment in our community infrastructure.  Exhibition-goers at this year’s Western Nova Scotia Exhibition, being held from August 2nd to 6th, will be able to use these new portable bleachers for the first time.  Furthermore, this investment allows other events and festivals to reap the benefits of our investment, ensuring the continued success of our many events and festivals in the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores region.”

- The Honourable Zach Churchill, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Yarmouth

“ With the assistance of both the federal and provincial governments, the Yarmouth County Agricultural Society was able to purchase these four new portable hydraulic bleachers that will not only enhance our own needs but will be available for rent to other organizations in our area.  We look forward to helping this area reach its potential as the premiere event hosting community in western Nova Scotia.”
