Eastern PEI Families to Enjoy Improved Community Spaces for a Better Quality of Life

News Release

Federal and provincial governments join six organizations in Kings County to announce projects

August 28, 2017 – Fortune, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Residents and visitors in Eastern PEI will benefit from safer and more accessible gathering spaces for social and recreational activities, as well as improved tourism products and services, as a result of more than $622,000 from the Government of Canada and $61,000 from the Province of PEI.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Member of Parliament for Cardigan, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), joined by the Honourable Pat Murphy, PEI Minister for Rural and Regional Development.

The federal funding will support six projects, including upgrades to improve accessibility at Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 3 in Souris, the interpretive centre in Naufrage and the St. Peters Area Rink and Recreation Club. The Morell Community Rink, the Destination Centre in St. Peters and the Fortune Community Centre will also be renovated and upgraded. The venues are vital resources for the small communities, hosting daily gatherings and special events, boosting quality of life for residents and welcoming visitors to learn more about the region.

The Province of PEI is providing additional support for three of the projects. Through the Department of Rural and Regional Development’s Community Development Program, the Souris Legion will receive $20,000 and the Fortune Community Centre will receive $10,000 to support their projects. The Department is also providing $31,000 to the Friends of Shipwreck Point Lighthouse through the Northside Windmill Enhancement Program to support upgrades to the interpretive centre in Naufrage.

This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150), a $300‑million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $33.2 million is being invested in Atlantic Canada.

Quotes

“This investment is a community-building project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And there’s no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces.”

  • The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“I am pleased to see the Government of Canada recognizing the great work being done in rural communities across our region through this important funding program. These projects have been made possible thanks to the dedication of many volunteers working to improve their communities and create opportunity for future generations. This federal support will ensure that more people can benefit from the vision of these community organizations.”

  • The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Member of Parliament for Cardigan

“I would like to commend the many community-minded volunteers for their hard work on each of these projects. The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to working in partnership with community organizations to enhance the social, recreational and economic opportunities in rural areas across the province.”

  • The Honourable Pat Murphy, Minister of Rural and Regional Development

“We are grateful to be among the projects announced today, each of which play important roles in their communities. Established in 1928, the Fortune Community Centre provides the Fortune and surrounding areas a community meeting space, a venue for weddings, anniversaries, and other celebrations, fundraisers, bingo, a children's playground, darts, girl guides, concerts, festivals and other events.”

  • Cathy Rose, Board Member, Fortune Community Centre
