Less Waste, More Jobs and Export Opportunities

News release

Sustane Technologies Inc.’s advanced recycling operation to provide greener, more cost-effective solutions to waste management

April 4, 2018 – Chester, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Investing in clean technology solutions creates valuable middle class jobs for Canadians, protects our environment and helps position Canada as a global leader in the sector. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting Halifax-based clean tech pioneers Sustane Technologies Inc. so it can secure the equipment it needs to convert municipal solid waste (MSW) destined for the landfill into clean fuel products and recyclable materials.

Today Bernadette Jordan, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margarets, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced a $500,000 repayable contribution, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, that will allow Sustane Technologies to integrate a plastic-to-diesel solution into its plant.

Developed by Renewlogy, a company based in the United States, the technology will enable Sustane to recycle plastic waste into diesel fuel for commercial sale. It will also provide enough process heat to power its new commercial operations in Chester, so it will be as environmentally and cost efficient as possible. Once the project is complete and the Chester plant is operational, Sustane will be able to market its technology to municipal governments in Canada and the United States, creating significant export opportunities, while providing many new jobs for more than 25 people at Sustane Chester.

This project builds on the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces’ commitment to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. The strategy involves targeted actions to support clean technology projects that will help diversify the region's economy, open up new markets, reduce carbon emissions and create good jobs for Atlantic Canadians.
