Aerospace business on leading edge of 3D clean technology

News release

Government of Canada invests $3.2 million for state-of-the-art upgrades at MDS Coating Technologies

July 9, 2018 – Slemon Park, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

In Western Prince Edward Island, businesses in aerospace and advanced manufacturing are leading through innovation in clean technology, training, and sector growth. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting the integration of new technology at one of the leading companies in Prince Edward Island’s aerospace sector, thereby advancing the innovation economy in Atlantic Canada and creating well-paying middle class jobs.

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, today announced a $3.2 million investment in new digital manufacturing processes for MDS Coating Technologies (MCT).

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF), is providing $3,000,000 in conditionally repayable funding to MCT to develop innovative new additive manufacturing and automation processes to support its specialized coatings and super polishing processes for aerospace and industrial turbine engine components. Portions of this project are being undertaken in partnership with the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program (BDP), is also providing $200,000 in repayable funding to enable MCT to purchase a 3-D metal printer to support new techniques in its manufacturing processes.

These investments build on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. This Strategy focuses on building a strong culture of innovation by supporting creative and entrepreneurial people, creating jobs, and investing in state-of-the-art technologies.
