Aerospace business on leading edge of 3D clean technology
Government of Canada invests $3.2 million for state-of-the-art upgrades at MDS Coating Technologies
July 9, 2018 – Slemon Park, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
In Western Prince Edward Island, businesses in aerospace and advanced manufacturing are leading through innovation in clean technology, training, and sector growth. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting the integration of new technology at one of the leading companies in Prince Edward Island’s aerospace sector, thereby advancing the innovation economy in Atlantic Canada and creating well-paying middle class jobs.
The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, today announced a $3.2 million investment in new digital manufacturing processes for MDS Coating Technologies (MCT).
The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF), is providing $3,000,000 in conditionally repayable funding to MCT to develop innovative new additive manufacturing and automation processes to support its specialized coatings and super polishing processes for aerospace and industrial turbine engine components. Portions of this project are being undertaken in partnership with the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program (BDP), is also providing $200,000 in repayable funding to enable MCT to purchase a 3-D metal printer to support new techniques in its manufacturing processes.
These investments build on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. This Strategy focuses on building a strong culture of innovation by supporting creative and entrepreneurial people, creating jobs, and investing in state-of-the-art technologies.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to support MDS Coating Technologies, a company that has developed and commercialized clean technology solutions for a world-wide aerospace market. This major investment is helping build capacity in additive manufacturing, which will strengthen the Atlantic region's ability to adapt to this next generation technology.”
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
“MDS Coating Technologies has continually demonstrated leadership and innovation in the aerospace industry, and has brought new employment opportunities to Western PEI. I have followed their story with great interest, and I am deeply impressed at their forward thinking approach. Their successes benefit our community in many ways and reach across the globe.”
- Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont
“MDS Coating is very pleased to team up with ACOA and UPEI on this project to further push our technologies to meet our future needs and expectations from our customers. The AIF program is an extremely valuable tool to help MCT position itself as a world leader for gas turbine protective coatings and surface technologies.”
- Phil Rodger, President and COO, MDS Coating Technologies
"MDS Coating Technologies and the UPEI Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering share the same mindset regarding leadership and excellence in research, technology, and people. Additive manufacturing is changing how R&D companies design for complex, intricate components in various industries. We love being at the cutting-edge, working with MDS, giving the next generation of engineers the extraordinary opportunity for design and advanced skills, and being an Atlantic hotspot of applied, innovative research in aerospace and sustainable applications."
- Dr. Amy Hsiao, associate professor, Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering, University of Prince Edward Island
MDS Coating Technologies Corporation (MCT) was founded in 1997 and established its primary operation in Slemon Park, Prince Edward Island in 2003.
MCT has facilities in Slemon Park, PEI and Montreal, Quebec.
Application of the company’s coating and surface treatment technologies have led to marked reductions in engine maintenance costs, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
MCT received the prestigious R&D 100 Award in 2013, and a Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) award in 2015.
