Entrepreneurial programs equip the youth of PEI for productive careers

News release

Junior Achievement PEI prepares students for the workplace, teaches entrepreneurship and financial literacy

November 20, 2018 – Charlottetown, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Gaining business skills allows students across Prince Edward Island to develop knowledge and experiences that will help them to become talented workers and entrepreneurs. That is why the governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are supporting Junior Achievement of PEI (JAPEI) in engaging with the province’s youth to develop their interest in running a business, build leadership skills and become productive members of the workforce.

Sean Casey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Chris Palmer, Prince Edward Island Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, today announced funding support for Junior Achievement PEI.

Through its Business Development Program, ACOA is providing a non-repayable contribution of $152,602 to Junior Achievement of PEI. The Government of PEI is contributing $46,800 through the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy, by supporting initiatives that build a skilled workforce, support rural development and create opportunities for Atlantic Canadian youth.

It's exciting to have the federal and provincial governments continue their commitment to Island youth through JAPEI. This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver top-notch curriculum-based programming in the areas of Financial Literacy, Work Readiness and Entrepreneurship to students across Prince Edward Island. We continue to be motivated to know that a high percentage of participants are saying that JA programming has had a significant impact on their desire to be an entrepreneur.
