News release

Support for state-of-the-art facility will make central Labrador communities stronger

March 18, 2019 – Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Modern community infrastructure is essential to building vibrant, sustainable communities and enhancing the quality of life for residents. It also helps to attract new businesses and support economic development.

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay recognizes the importance of up-to-date infrastructure to community growth and the health and well-being of its residents. That is why the Town is building the Labrador Wellness Centre, which will feature an aquatics centre, a multi-purpose gymnasium, a fitness centre, community rooms, an indoor walking and running track and a childcare centre. Multi-purpose areas will also be created throughout the wellness centre to support its core functions and to provide valuable community engagement and gathering spaces.

This new state-of-the-art centre will enable the Town to provide enhanced recreational and community programs, promote wellness and healthy living to central Labrador communities, better position the Town to host major conferences and sporting events, attract new residents and grow the region’s economy.

The Government of Canada is providing a non-repayable contribution of $1.5 million towards the contruction of the multi-purpose areas in the new facility.

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), made the announcement today.

The Government of Canada is making smart investments that will create good, middle-class jobs in our country. It is helping Atlantic Canadian communities access the tools they need to create sustainable economic growth. Support for this project is one way the Government of Canada is working to achieve its Atlantic Growth Strategy outcome of long-term economic prosperity in the region.
