Supporting Expanded Electronics Recycling at Carrefour Environnement Saguenay

News release

April 15, 2019 – Edmundston, NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Clean technology is the way of the future. Environment-related industries create long-term well-paying jobs and contribute to the well-being of communities by reducing their environmental impact. Enterprises that contribute to clean growth play a critical role in Canada’s transition to an economy that is both sustainable and environmentally responsible. These enterprises are creating new opportunities for growth that lead the world toward a better, cleaner tomorrow.

Carrefour Environnement Saguenay, the only enterprise certified in the recycling and refurbishment of electronic waste operating in New Brunswick, will upgrade existing equipment to improve its operational capacity. It will also make leasehold improvements to its Edmundston plant, increasing the volume of electronic waste that it can process, creating nine new jobs in the region’s green industry. The more electronic waste it can process, the more jobs it can create. At maximum capacity, the plant could employ up to 50 people.

The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is providing a repayable contribution of $244,750 for this project of over 1 million dollars.

René Arseneault, Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, along with Bertrand Tremblay, CEO of Carrefour Environnement Saguenay, made the announcement today.

Economic growth and the creation of good jobs for Atlantic Canadians require innovation and diversification. Support for this project is one way the Government of Canada is working to support businesses to scale-up, increase productivity and participate in the innovation economy. Projects like this also contribute to the Atlantic Growth Strategy outcome of long-term economic prosperity in the region.

René Arseneault, Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche

“With its 20 years of expertise, Carrefour Environnement is delighted with the opening of its new residual materials recovery and re-use plant in Edmundston. We hope that our purchase of the building and several million dollars in investments will signal that we’re investing in New Brunswick and we’re in it for the long haul. People and the environment have always been at the heart of our development model. Just as we did in Saguenay, we want to emphasize local, regional and provincial development to maximize job creation and economic returns for the region.”
