Sustane Fuels launched to help boost clean energy adoption in Canada
Sustane Technologies Inc. builds capacity to enable customers to convert from fossil fuels to clean renewable synthetic fuel
August 8, 2019 – Chester, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
Finding clean technology solutions to address environmental problems such as single-use plastic waste helps reduce the impacts of climate change and grow a sustainable economy for future generations. That is why the Government of Canada is supporting Sustane Technologies Inc. with a project to test the performance of its patented, green energy fuel made from recycled plastics in an active industrial setting.
Driven to provide innovative solutions to help eliminate waste, Sustane Technologies is working with customers to enable them to convert their active manufacturing facilities from fossil fuels to its synthetic oil derived from recycled plastics. The switch to Sustane Technologies’ green fuel could replace millions of litres of Bunker C fuel oil per year, resulting in lower emissions and reduced waste for better environmental outcomes in Canada and worldwide.
Today, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margarets, announced support to Sustane Technologies’ project on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
The Government of Canada is taking practical steps to support the global transition to a low-carbon, low-pollution and resource-efficient economy, through initiatives like the Clean Growth Hub. The Hub helps clean technology entrepreneurs and adopters find funding to research and develop sustainable products, commercialize clean technologies and export them around the world.
“Leaders in clean innovation recognize the long-term economic advantages of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. By helping Canadian companies transition to a low-carbon, environmentally-friendly and sustainable economy, we are furthering Canada’s goal to make clean technology one of Canada’s top five exporting industries by 2025.”
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
“Embracing clean technology makes good business sense. It helps diversify the region's economy, opens new markets, reduces carbon emissions and creates good-paying jobs for Canadians. Through partnerships with clean tech companies like Sustane Technologies, we are supporting our region’s long-term economic health and an environmentally prosperous planet for future generations around the world.”
- The Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margarets
“Nova Scotia has long been recognized as a leader within North America for waste diversion. Sustane and the Municipality of Chester are taking it to another level. This new process will divert over 90 per cent of the Municipal Solid Waste stream that is being sent to landfill today.”
- Peter Vinall, President & Co-founder, Sustane Technologies Inc.
Sustane Technologies’ patented technology converts solid waste from municipal landfills into biomass energy and green Recovered Synthetic Diesel (RSD) fuel.
Following the successful testing of its plastic-to-diesel technology, Sustane Technologies launched Sustane Fuels Inc. to oversee the conversion of the facilities to its green fuel and commercialize the oil for global markets.
ACOA, through its Business Development Program, is providing a $358,750 repayable contribution to Sustane Technologies. The funding will support project management, engineering services and the design, procurement, installation and testing of equipment to convert these, and future, facilities.
Sustane’s green synthetic diesel will be used to offset high-emission Bunker C fuel oil in two industrial facilities.
Bunker C fuel oil is an inexpensive and readily available source of energy in many parts of the world. While it is commonly used as a fuel in industrial burners for large-scale heating and power-production stations, it is also used as a fuel in internal combustion engines.
Sustane’s RSD fuel offers a more cost effective, efficient and clean solution to Bunker C fuel oil.
This project will support eight full-time positions and create one full-time job. It is expected to create an additional 20 jobs by the end of 2019.
This project builds on ACOA’s previous investments, which helped Sustane Technologies procure the necessary equipment to manufacture the plastic-to-diesel solution in its Chester-based facility.
