New facility and equipment will enhance company growth and create jobs

August 7, 2019 – Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Atlantic Canada’s food and beverage manufacturing sector plays a key role in driving sustainable economic growth, creating well-paying middle class jobs and strengthening and diversifying communities. To this end, Tuck’s Bee Better Farm is expanding its bottled juice manufacturing capacity to help grow its beverage business and create jobs in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Tuck’s Bee Better Farm is building a new facility and buying advanced manufacturing equipment to produce juice  using local cranberries and honey from the farm’s apiary. The new facility and equipment will enable the company to increase juice production and meet the growing demand for its naturally sweetened drink products in the province, as well as pursue future export opportunities. The farm’s expansion is also expected to create five new jobs.

The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is providing a repayable contribution of $206,850; the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, is contributing $251,650; and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership is investing $400,000 in this project.

Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Coast of Bays—Central—Notre Dame, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, along with the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, on behalf of the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources and the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (TCII), made the announcement today.

Economic growth and the creation of good jobs for Atlantic Canadians require innovation and diversification. Support for this project is one way the Government of Canada is working to help businesses scale-up, expand, increase productivity and participate in the innovation economy.

Quotes

“The Government of Canada is committed to creating good paying middle class jobs and growing the economy by supporting small and medium-sized businesses and investing in important sectors like manufacturing. We are pleased to help Tuck’s Bee Better Farm expand its beverage manufacturing operations and grow its innovative business, which will create new jobs and strengthen the local economy.”

- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Tuck’s Bee Better Farm is creating a lot of buzz with its honey production, value-added honey products and, most recently, its honey cranberry juice, which is being produced in partnership with local berry farmers. We are proud to invest in this expansion project and provide the company with the support and tools needed to improve its juice manufacturing capabilities, boost business growth, create local jobs and foster innovation in the manufacturing sector.”

- Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Coast of Bays—Central—Notre Dame

“Our support for the expansion of Tuck’s Bee Better Farm will assist this business with increasing its capacity to produce high quality honey and value added products such as honey cranberry juice. This is another great example of a Newfoundland and Labrador company contributing to economic development activity in the province. This development also aligns with The Way Forward Agriculture Sector work plan, which highlights the growth potential of secondary processing facilities and bees production in our province.”

- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

“With a proven record of innovation and productivity, born of vision and forged from hard work, Tuck's Bee Better Farm is increasing food production in Newfoundland and Labrador. As the province advances towards meeting The Way Forward goal to double food self-sufficiency, this support will allow Trevor Tuck to do more of what he does best - produce world-class natural products and continue to expand markets far beyond our borders.”

- The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources

“Tuck’s Bee Better Farm is very excited about the future and what our new honey bee facility is going to do for the local area and for the province. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to share our passion and knowledge about honey bees with others. Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the few places in the world where honey bees live free of parasites and, therefore, they do not have to be exposed to chemicals or antibiotics. Thus, making the hard work of beekeeping in this province pretty ‘sweet’ while producing some of the best honey and honey products in the world. Our new facility will showcase how we all can benefit from working together – just like the honey bees!”
