Like many sectors, the entertainment industry has been hard-hit by the pandemic and has had to find creative solutions to operate safely amid current restrictions. The Government of Canada is helping Annapolis Royal’s historic King’s Theatre adapt to challenges created by COVID-19 and prepare to offer audiences a better live theatre experience once it is safe to do so.

Federal government supports major upgrades

Today, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, announced a federal investment of $485,000 for the King’s Theatre Society. Minister Monsef made the announcement on behalf the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

The funding will enable the Theatre to increase the building’s energy efficiency, enhance the performance space and upgrade its website to support virtual performances. This project will also help the King’s Theatre find diverse ways to serve the community, support artists and offer live entertainment in compliance with public health restrictions.

Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to help small- and medium-sized enterprises prepare for lasting success long after the pandemic is over. Projects like this one are helping the entertainment industry rise to the challenges of COVID-19, protecting jobs, preserving artistic communities and positioning the sector for a strong recovery.

With this support, this landmark can continue to offer unique performances and experiences to people in Annapolis Royal and, virtually, all around the world.”
