Government of Canada supports revitalization of historic cemetery

August 26, 2022 · North Preston, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Adapting community spaces to be safe and accessible is integral to helping Canadian cities and towns thrive. Revitalizing existing and regionally significant areas contributes to the overall well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Today, Darrell Samson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook, announced an investment of $22,500 through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) for the Heritage Downey Road Cemetery Society. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

This support will allow the society to improve and expand the grounds of the historic 200-year-old Downey Road Cemetery in North Preston. Project activities include clearing debris, grooming and levelling pathways, and installing benches. These enhancements will provide community members of all abilities safe access to visit the cemetery.

The CCRF was launched in June 2021. The fund provides $500 million over two years to Canada’s regional development agencies (RDAs) to invest in shared and inclusive public spaces. The Government of Canada is committed to investing in shared spaces to make them safer, greener and more accessible. This will help stimulate local economies, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for Canadians.
